Wine Without Winesplaining: What That Actually Means

Ever felt like you needed to know something about wine before you could enjoy it? At Golden Road Vineyards, we believe wine should be fun, approachable, and free from judgment. Here's what Wine Without Winesplaining means to us.

Wine Without Winesplaining: What That Actually Means

We see it all the time. Someone walks into the tasting room and says, “Sorry, I don’t know anything about wine.”

Like they need to pass a test before they’re allowed to enjoy what’s in their glass. The right grape, the right glass, the right way to swirl and say you taste black cherry and pencil shavings when you really just taste grapes.

We think that’s silly.

At Golden Road, we say Wine Without Winesplaining. It’s not a line on a shirt, yet. It’s how we try to run our tasting room.

Winesplaining is when someone turns sharing what they know about wine into making you feel bad about what you don’t.

Knowing a lot about wine is great. We love that. The difference is whether you’re sharing because someone is curious or making them feel small because they don’t already know it. One starts a conversation. The other stops one.

We’re here for the conversation.

Wine Should Be Fun

Wine is for sunsets, birthdays, catching up with friends, meeting new ones, and quiet afternoons by the fire pit. It shouldn’t make you nervous.

You don’t need to memorize grape varieties or pronounce Gewürztraminer to walk in here. We’ll butcher it together and laugh about it.

If you leave having laughed, tried something new, or just enjoyed a glass with a good view, we call that a good visit.

Drink What You Like

Let’s settle this. If you like sweet wine, drink sweet wine. Love a big, bold red? Drink that. Want a cold white on a hot afternoon? Perfect. And if your favorite comes in a box, we’re not calling the wine police.

The best wine is the one you like drinking. Not the one someone tells you that you should like.

No Quizzes, No Apologies

If you’re curious, you’re good. Ask why one wine tastes sweeter, why some spend time in barrels, or what makes one sparkle. Or just tell us what you usually drink, and we’ll pour you something new to explore.

And when you taste, there are no wrong answers. If you get strawberries and your friend gets cherries, you’re both right. If all you can say is “I like this,” that’s more than enough.

We’ll Nerd Out If You Want Us To

Here’s the secret. We actually love the nerdy stuff. The yeast, the oak, the science, the farming, and the little bit of luck that turns grapes into wine.

Want to know why we picked a certain yeast or how the weather messed with us this year? Pull up a stool. We’ll go deep, and you’ll probably teach us something, too.

But if you just want a glass and a sunset over the vineyard, that’s just as good. Wine education should be an invitation, not a requirement.

Come Curious

Wine Without Winesplaining is how we want you to feel here: welcome, comfortable, and included.

Whether this is your first winery or your fiftieth, there’s a seat for you. Come knowing nothing. Come knowing way too much. Just come ready to enjoy what you like and maybe discover something new.

We’ll handle the winesplaining by not doing it.

Have you ever been winesplained to? Is there something you’ve always wanted to ask about wine but felt weird asking? Leave a comment or ask us next time you’re here. No judgment, just good conversation.
